What is Cochlear Implant?
A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted neuroprosthesis that provides a person with sensorineural hearing loss a modified sense of sound. CI bypasses the normal acoustic hearing process to replace it with electric signals which directly stimulate the auditory nerve.
Children with severe to profound degree of hearing loss who do not benefit with hearing aids are candidates for cochlear implant. It is an electronic device stimulating the auditory nerve. An internal device is inserted surgically and external device is worn on the ear. An individual with cochlear implant needs to undergo Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT).
